Safety Center
A few practical habits keep online dating safe. Here's what we recommend before and after you meet someone.
Meet in public, the first few times
Choose a public place for early meetups, and tell a friend where you're going and who you're meeting.
Video chat before you meet
A quick video call confirms the person matches their photos before you commit to meeting in person.
Never send money or gift cards
No genuine match will ever ask you for money, cryptocurrency, or gift cards — no matter the story.
Trust your instincts
If something feels off, it's fine to stop replying, unmatch, or leave — you never owe anyone an explanation.
Common warning signs
Watch for these patterns, especially early in a conversation:
- They move the conversation off StarDate very quickly, to text or another app.
- They profess strong feelings before you've met or spoken much.
- They describe a financial emergency, investment opportunity, or ask you to help move money.
- Their photos, job, or story don't quite add up, or they avoid a video call.
Reporting and blocking
Every profile and message can be reported or blocked directly from the chat. Reports go to our moderation team, who review them and take action — you'll get a notice in your settings if action is taken on a report you're involved in, and you can appeal any decision made against your own account.
